Whartons Creek Bank Stabilisation
Location
Wollongong
Year
2023
Bank stabilisation delivered alongside an active public coastline.
Completed for Wollongong City Council in May 2023, the Whartons Creek project addressed erosion and scour that had undermined the existing bridge-abutment footings and reduced the stability of the surrounding creek banks.
EBG installed temporary shoring and underpinning to strengthen the bridge abutments, together with a grout-filled flexible mattress and more than 500 tonnes of imported basalt armour rock. The new revetment reduced the northern bank slope and relieved pressure at the toe, providing improved long-term support to the embankment.
Additional works included extending the existing stormwater pipe, constructing a new in-situ concrete headwall and resurfacing the gabion mesh along the southern embankment to extend its serviceable life. Turfing and site reinstatement completed the works.
Environmental and public-interface controls remained central throughout construction. Silt curtains and sediment fencing were continuously monitored, while an exclusion zone protected the Sydney Water vent shaft and existing sewer infrastructure. EBG also maintained public access to the adjacent beach and cycleway throughout delivery.
